Paul Gauguin Cruises

Lush, full of life, kissed by the sun and blessed with a breathtaking shoreline, the “rich coast” is just what it claims to be.

At the confluence of two oceans, two continents, and two climates, Costa Rica is one of the most ecologically diverse places on earth. Bring your binoculars and prepare to be wowed by wildlife and seduced by the Eden-like beauty of the country that time forgot.

Day-to-Day Itinerary

Day 1 - Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica

Absorb Costa Rica’s magnificent biodiversity by adding a land package to your cruise. Venture to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, where 300-year-old trees and orchids form a spectacular backdrop to resplendent quetzals, tapirs, monkeys, sloths, and other rainforest residents. Or to Tortuguero National Park, one of the most remote places in Costa Rica, known for being a primary nesting site of endangered green turtles.

Day 2 - At Sea

Day 3 - San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua

This tranquil fishing village is nestled along a crescent-shaped bay dotted with small, private yachts and commercial fishing boats. It’s a perfect launching point for exploring some of the area’s local treasures. Visit Masaya Volcano National Park to observe the still active volcano. Shop for one-of-a-kind arts and crafts at the local Indian Market. And arrive in Granada with plenty of time to stroll along its impressive colonnades.

Day 4 - Playas del Coco, Costa Rica

Playas del Coco is one of Costa Rica’s most celebrated dive and snorkeling areas with dolphin, puffer fish, eels, stingrays, and other tropical sea life animating the waters. In addition to its unspoiled cocoa-colored beaches, Playas del Coco is a jumping off point for rainforest canopy tours, nature walks, and other inspiring eco-adventures.

Day 5 - Quepos, Costa Rica

This former banana-exporting town is your base camp for a day of rainforest adventure. Walk along trails that weave up to waterfalls or soar high above the jungle floor surrounded by wildlife. Then grab your camera for a walk through Manuel Antonio National Park, with its lovely beaches, easy trails, and exuberant animal life.

Day 6 - Bahia Drake, Costa Rica

Go horseback riding through a tropical paradise. Or take the tour to nearby Corcovado National Park. Protected by a natural rock barrier, the reserve offers some of the planet’s most astounding biological diversity. Keep an eye out for red-eyed tree frogs, 100 species of butterflies, and countless bird species, including Scarlet Macaws.

Day 7 - Curú - Tortuga Island, Costa Rica

Spend a morning exploring the Curú National Wildlife Refuge, a private reserve where you'll find capuchin and howler monkeys in the rainforests, crocodiles in the swamps – and virtually no one but yourself on the unspoiled beaches

In the afternoon, a small-ship exclusive: Head to uninhabited Tortuga Island to snorkel in bathtub-warm waters or take a glass-bottomed boat offshore in search of the island's namesake sea turtles.

Day 8 - Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica

Absorb Costa Rica’s magnificent biodiversity by adding a land package to your cruise. Venture to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, where 300-year-old trees and orchids form a spectacular backdrop to resplendent quetzals, tapirs, monkeys, sloths, and other rainforest residents. Or to Tortuguero National Park, one of the most remote places in Costa Rica, known for being a primary nesting site of endangered green turtles.
